It was the Fourth of July, and Chester and I were determined to have some fun. Fireworks were illegal in Maine, but that didn't make much of a difference to us. See, something a great many people forget after growing up is that schools are somewhat like prisons: They both involve the compulsory concentration of large groups of some of society's least scrupulous. And the food is comparable. As such they run, in a lot of ways, in a similar fashion. Why this is pertinent is that they've both got their own simple yet violent barter economy. Play your cards right, and you can get whatever you want. Now, I didn't have that skill, but Chester did. He could wheel and deal with the best of them, and that was why when Chester said he knew a guy, there was no doubt in my mind that Chester's guy was our guy--and why we were waiting by the schoolhouse to meet him.
